ICE Mirror - file mirror utility with Unicode support. This utility creates or maintains an exact duplicate of the original directory. ICE Mirror will compare the mirrored directory to the master directory and correct any disparities. ICE Mirror allows ultra fast mirroring because it performs incremental updates. In other words it only copies files that have changed. If only a few files have been updated, it performs very fast. Also ICE Mirror allows making differential updates. The differential updates are very useful if you are use read-only media (CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, etc.). There are two steps in differential updates: 1. Comparison the master directory and the mirrored directory. 2. Copying all new files from the master directory to the secondary mirrored directory. In other words it only copies files that have changed in the mirrored directory to the secondary mirrored directory.

rsync

rsync is a software application for Unix which synchronizes files and directories from one location to another while minimizing data transfer using delta encoding when appropriate. An important feature of rsync not found in most similar programs/protocols is that the mirroring takes place with only one transmission in each direction. rsync can copy or display directory contents and copy files, optionally using compression and recursion. In daemon mode, rsync listens on the default TCP port of 873, serving files in the native rsync protocol or via a remote shell such as RSH or SSH. In the latter case, the rsync client executable must be installed on both the local and the remote host.

Grsync is a rsync gui, a graphical user interface for the rsync file synchronization and backup tool. It works on linux, solaris, windows, mac os x and maemo. It uses the gtk libraries and can work under the gnome desktop. It doesn't need the gnome libraries to run, but can of course run under gnome pretty fine. It can be effectively used to synchronize local directories and it supports remote targets as well (even though it doesn't support browsing the remote folder). Sample uses of grsync include: synchronize a music collection with removable devices, backup personal files to a networked drive, replication of a partition to another one, mirroring of files, etc. Features * Most commonly used rsync options available, additional options may be specified by command line switches * Saves multiple settings with customized names (no limit on number of "sessions") * Can do simulation or normal execution * Captures and prints rsync output nicely on a own window and log to a file * Parses rsync output to display progress bars and other information * Highlights errors and show them on a separate window, for better and faster control over rsync runs * Can pause rsync execution * A good number of translations available * Can run custom commands before (and stop in case of failure) and after rsync * Shell script for batch, crontab use etc. provided (grsync-batch) * Can import and export sessions on file; i.e. share your settings with people! * Can minimize to system tray (status icon) * Can run specific sessions with superuser privileges * Rsync backup made easy! * Needs rsync installed on the system (command line tool only, no need for server-side daemon) and GTK * Available for free and with sources! * Works on many linux distributions (including Nokia Maemo), Mac OS X and windows!

Unison

$

Unison is a file-synchronization tool for Unix and Windows. It allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host), modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other. Unison shares a number of features with tools such as configuration management packages (CVS, PRCS, Subversion, BitKeeper, etc.), distributed filesystems (Coda, etc.), uni-directional mirroring utilities (rsync, etc.), and other synchronizers (Intellisync, Reconcile, etc). However, there are several points where it differs: * Unison runs on both Windows and many flavors of Unix (Solaris, Linux, OS X, etc.) systems. Moreover, Unison works across platforms, allowing you to synchronize a Windows laptop with a Unix server, for example. * Unlike simple mirroring or backup utilities, Unison can deal with updates to both replicas of a distributed directory structure. Updates that do not conflict are propagated automatically. Conflicting updates are detected and displayed. * Unlike a distributed filesystem, Unison is a user-level program: there is no need to modify the kernel or to have superuser privileges on either host. * Unison works between any pair of machines connected to the internet, communicating over either a direct socket link or tunneling over an encrypted ssh connection. It is careful with network bandwidth, and runs well over slow links such as PPP connections. Transfers of small updates to large files are optimized using a compression protocol similar to rsync. * Unison is resilient to failure. It is careful to leave the replicas and its own private structures in a sensible state at all times, even in case of abnormal termination or communication failures. * Unison has a clear and precise specification. * Unison is free; full source code is available under the GNU Public License.

Syncless

Syncless - An open-source and free synchronization tool so seamless youll forget about it What makes Syncless so unique is the way synchronization is performed. The current paradigm in the way file synchronization is done is to create a job by setting folder pairs and then start synchronizing. Syncless does away with this completely by introducing the concept of folder tagging. No VSS (Volume Shadow Support): cannot sync open files. The concept of tagging has been applied by notable applications in various interesting ways. Facebook allows users to tag people into photos and almost all blog engines allows users to tag posts as a form of categorization. The main reason behind the increased use of tagging is because tagging is a very natural thought process that everyone does when trying to associate words or concepts with the unfamiliar. By applying this simple and natural idea to file synchronization, users will be able to synchronize folders by simply tagging different folders with the same tag, resulting in a near seamless experience in synchronization. A group of folders with the same tag will always be kept in sync automatically in real-time by Syncless, without any need for user intervention.

Organyze 3.1 SYNC, a Windows application for desktops and laptops, takes care of the headache of keeping files updated in all locations in today’s fast moving world, where we use multiple computers and devices for work, social activity and fun. It ensures that folders in two or more locations contain identical updated files. Unlike with some other sync programs, Organyze 3.1 SYNC does not delete a file in the target folder if a similar-named file has been deleted in the source folder. We have maintained this feature to ensure that if you delete a file in one place by mistake (or even deliberately), you do not lose that file everywhere. To delete a file you need to delete it separately from the various machines you use. Features: - Attractive and easy-to-use interface - Synchronize data between your desktop PC and laptop via a pen drive or external hard disk. - Flexible options of setting sync either one-way (say, from your pen drive to your PC or back) OR two-way (simultaneously from your pen drive to your PC and back) - Supports all file formats, except (for security reasons) some formats such as exe and your PC registry files. - Supports files of any size. - Synchronization provides an easy and reliable backup solution - Selective syncing: you can include and exclude selective file formats, date range.

It aggregates and combines events for a few seconds and then spawns one (or more) process(es) to synchronize the changes. By default this is rsync. Lsyncd is thus a light-weight live mirror solution that is comparatively easy to install not requiring new filesystems or blockdevices and does not hamper local filesystem performance. Rsync+ssh is an advanced action configuration that uses a SSH to act file and directory moves directly on the target instead of retransmitting the move destination over the wire. Fine-grained customizaton can be achieved through the config file. Custom action configs can even be written from scratch in cascading layers ranging from shell scripts to code written in the Lua language. This way simplicity can be balanced with powerfulness.
